Sorority divas committing heinous crimes, beloved 90’s stars making comebacks, suspenseful FBI training dramas: each year, the fall season brings  a variety of new television shows, ranging in genre and in quality.  We discuss the premises of some of the more promising shows and give our take on them thus far.  If you’re in search of a fresh show to watch this season, look no further.

Scream Queens (Tuesdays on Fox)

This fall, the creator of Glee and American Horror Story brings us Scream Queens, a new Fox horror-dramedy that combines Mean Girls vibes with a horror premise and acerbic satire.  Starring Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Ariana Grande, and more celebrities, the show follows a group of students at Wallace University as multiple graphic murders occur and the criminal remains elusive.  The plot features  crude humor at times and often horrifying, excessive violence, but despite this, the show is still entertaining and surprisingly witty.  If you’re looking for a teen-targeted show that will make you laugh but also cower in fear, Scream Queens may be the one for you.

Code Black (Wednesdays on CBS)

Inspired by Ryan McGarry’s acclaimed 2014 documentary Code Black, this CBS show’s plot revolves around a Los Angeles emergency room experiencing overwhelming logistical issues with staff,  patient load, and more.  It could turn out to be a carbon-copy of popular medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy or House; however, Code Black stars Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Hayden, so the show seems to have more potential.

Grandfathered (Tuesdays on Fox)

Starring TV legend John Stamos, of Full House fame, Grandfathered tells the story of a typical self-centered socialite named Jimmy Martino (Stamos) who is suddenly given the responsibilities of being a grandfather when his son, Gerald (Josh Peck, Drake and Josh), arrives with his own young daughter in tow.  Although the show could become stale after a few episodes, so far it remains light-hearted and pretty comical.

Quantico (Sundays on ABC)

Thrillers and dramas abound on screen these days, and Quantico aims to bring a fresh take on the genre.  The riveting show stars Bollywood celebrity Priyanka Chopra as Alex Parrish, and follows her and other young FBI recruits as they train to become special agents.  The plot thickens in each episode as characters reveal secrets, some of which may be linked to the attacks on September 11, 2001.

Limitless (Tuesdays on CBS)

Most of us have seen or at least heard of the movie with this name starring Bradley Cooper.  This new TV drama is a reworked version of the creative story, hopefully avoiding the mediocre reviews given to its cinematic predecessor.  Limitless follows Brian Finch (Jake McDorman, American Sniper) as he experiences the effects of a powerful mind-altering drug called NZT-48, and challenges viewers to ask themselves, “what would you do if you could access all of your brain?”
